Welcome to Red Ball 1 at Five Star Tennis! Our dynamic 30-minute class utilizes low-compression red balls, introducing correct stroke techniques in a fun and fast-paced environment. Our coaches expertly blend agility, balance, coordination drills, and tennis-specific exercises to ensure a comprehensive and enjoyable learning experience for your child.

Competencies – What we teach our players

Movement/ Balance Movement around the court

  • Move sideways and forwards
  • Balance on the right and left leg and bend over to touch a cone with balance
  • Jump over a line or small obstacle and land with balance

Under Arm Throw- Groundstrokes

  • Throw a ball with right hand while stepping with left leg
  • Throw a ball with left hand while stepping with right leg
  • Throw ball with varying depths and to different locations on court

Over Arm Throw – Serve/Overhead

  • Put the ball in play using an over arm throw
  • Throw a ball with varying depths and to different locations on court

Catch After the Bounce – Perception/Receiving Skills

  • Move a short distance to the ball and catch it after the bounce on both sides of the body
  • Catch ball with two hands and in a cone

Two Handed Throw – Forehand/Backhand

  • Throw a large ball with both hands on both sides using a side-arm throw
  • Throw a large ball with varying depths and to different locations on the court

One-handed Control – Forehand

  • Roll the ball along on the ground to different locations using the racquet
  • Balance the ball and roll it around the racquet frame in both directions (roly poly)
  • Drop the ball and hit into a designated area
  • Control the ball during a rolling rally with a partner

Two-Handed Control – Backhand

  • Roll the ball along the ground to different locations using the racquet
  • Hit into a designated area from a coach drop feed

Game play

  • Throw or hit a ball cooperatively to a partner who catches the ball in a cone or with two hands
  • Control the ball during a rolling rally with a partner being able to trap and tap the ball using both sides of the body using a racquet

Score

  • Count the number of times a task is performed and number of shots in a rally.
  • Demonstrate an over arm and under arm throw to begin a point.
  • Differentiate between the first and second bounce.

Sportsmanship

  • Cooperate with others and take turns.

  • Trying to execute the drill the correct way
