Welcome to the Red Ball 2 program at Five Star Tennis! Your child will not only refine tennis techniques but also develop rally skills, while our expert coaches cover throwing technique as the serve is introduced.

Competencies – What we teach our players

Agility
- Maintain balance while shuffling side to side and running forward
Balance
- Jump side-to-side and forwards/backwards with feet together with dynamic balance
- Frog jump (using arms) while landing softly in an athletic position
- Hop on one leg with balance
Coordination
- Move to a ball to catch off of one bounce in a cone or with two hands
- Throw a ball underhand to various distances with either hand
Speed
- Skipping with coordinated arms

Ready position/Recovery
- Athletic stance with wide base, knees bent, shoulders back, eyes forward, and on balls of feet
- Racquet above wrist with elbows away from body
- Recovery after shot to a poly spot or behind the baseline near center
Serve
- Over arm throw to various locations of the court with a coordinated action
- Begin point with underhand serve with bounce
- Begin point with overhand serve
Volley
- Volley with the racquet above the wrist while stepping across the body
Forehand
- Perform 7 bounce taps and tap downs using the forehand side of the racquet
- Drop hit into designated area with correct contact point and follow through with one hand
- Consistently hit into the court off of a coach’s drop and hand feeds with low to high action
Backhand
- Perform 7 bounce taps using the backhand side of the racquet
- Hit a ball oof of coach drop feed into designated area with two hands
- Consistently hit into the court off of a coach or player tossed ball using a low to high action

Game play
- Throw and/or drop hit a ball cooperatively to a partner into designated area
- Throw and catch rally with a big ball (using an action that represents a groundstroke)
- Demonstrate an over arm and under arm throw to begin a point
Score
- Understanding the parts of the court
- Be able to call the ball in or out
- Count the number of times a task is performed
- Keep score using a simple scoring system (e.g. games to 4 or 7)
Sportsmanship
- Cooperate with others and take turns
- Compete with others in a fair and friendly manner
Engagement
- Listening to the coach
- Trying to execute the drill the correct way
Energy & Effort
- Maintain effort throughout the entire duration of the practice
